Support & FAQs

Answers to the questions we hear most from calorie counters, GLP-1 patients, fasters, and anyone tired of typing food.

Photo logging & AI accuracy

How accurate is the AI?

For common, well-lit meals it’s within 10-20% of a manual log. Ambiguous portions (mixed plate, blended food, unusual angles) drop accuracy — that’s why every AI result is editable before saving. Each detected item carries a confidence score.

What happens to my photos?

The image is sent over TLS to our AI vision provider, analyzed, and the structured result returned. The raw photo is not retained. We don’t store the image, and the provider operates under a no-retention enterprise agreement. Only the parsed items + macros are saved with your log.

How do I get better accuracy?

Frame the whole meal in one shot. Good lighting. Avoid acute angles. If portion sizes matter (cutting/bulking) place a reference item (fork, hand, glass) in the frame — AI uses it to estimate scale.

Can I add items the AI missed?

Yes. On the result screen, tap Add Item to manually search the database. Or tap Retake to redo the photo — sometimes a better angle catches the side dish AI missed.

Barcode & database

What barcodes does it scan?

UPC-A, UPC-E, EAN-13, EAN-8. Works on most US and international packaged goods. We pull nutrition from USDA, FatSecret Platform, and Open Food Facts — whichever has the verified record first.

What if my barcode isn’t found?

Tap Add Manually. Enter the nutrition facts off the panel. NutriLish caches your manual entries so you don’t have to re-enter the next time you scan the same product.

Is the database trustworthy?

USDA FoodData Central is government-verified. FatSecret has crowd-verified entries flagged with confidence. Open Food Facts is community-edited and the broadest. We prefer USDA when available, then verified FatSecret, then Open Food Facts.

Can I save my custom recipes?

Yes — Pro feature. Build a recipe once with its ingredients, save it, and log a serving any time later. The macros stay accurate as you adjust serving sizes.

Targets, GLP-1, IF, special diets

How are my calorie / macro targets set?

Sex, age, height, weight, activity level — standard Mifflin-St Jeor BMR + activity multiplier — with your goal applied as a delta. Cut = -300 to -750 kcal. Lean bulk = +100 to +300. Maintenance = at TDEE. Custom values in Pro.

What does GLP-1 friendly mean?

Smaller default portions, lower calorie minimums, dose-day reminders, and protein-priority macro layout for users on GLP-1 weight-loss medications (Wegovy, Zepbound, Mounjaro, Ozempic). NutriLish does not give medical advice — consult your prescribing physician.

How does the IF timer work?

Pick a protocol (16:8, 18:6, 20:4, OMAD) or set a custom window. Start the timer when you finish your last meal. Notifications fire at the halfway, near-end, and end of fast (configurable). The food log auto-marks meals as in or out of window.

Can I switch diet modes mid-week?

Yes. Settings → Goal. Switch between Cut, Lean Bulk, Maintain, Keto, Plant-Based, GLP-1, or Post-Bariatric. Targets recalculate immediately; prior days stay logged as they were.
